Top 5 Survey Questions to Ask Your CDL Drivers

As any competitive CDL driver recruiting team knows, a team's current drivers are invaluable to the business's ongoing success. While recruiting new drivers may be one of the biggest focuses for recruiters, ensuring current drivers are satisfied and valued is critical.

This is why many recruiting teams are turning to surveys to see exactly what drivers are looking for from their carriers. One of the best parts of surveying your drivers is that you can also ask questions to help your team deliver a better recruiting experience to new drivers and help with recruiting and marketing efforts.

Here are five top survey questions to ask your CDL drivers:

  1. Would you recommend {this company} to a friend or peer looking for employment? If your current drivers aren't willing to recommend your company to someone they know, it's a sign that something might be off. A good follow-up question may be to ask for 1 – 2 contacts that the driver would be willing to recommend.
  2. How would you rate the {CEO/leadership/executive team} of the company on a scale of 1 – 10? Even though drivers are on the road most of the time, they still interact with your company and often have a unique take on how the leadership team connects with other departments and teams. This question can help your recruiting team gauge how satisfied drivers are with the leadership.
  3. How would you rate your recruiting experience on a scale of 1 – 10? This question asks drivers to reflect on their recruiting experience. While you're not asking for any specifics (that will come later), it's important to know if you're at least on the right track from a recruiting standpoint. As a follow-up, you can ask drivers who give a low score what may have happened to make their recruiting experience unsatisfactory..
  4. What is one piece of advice or feedback you would give the team to make your experience as a driver more satisfactory? This open-ended question is excellent for gathering advice and direct feedback from drivers. Your drivers are on the road every day, engaging with your team, technology, and other drivers. Asking for suggestions on improving this experience can go a long way in boosting driver morale and value.
  5. What is one piece of advice you would give a new or inexperienced driver looking to break into the industry? Recruiting teams can also use driver surveys to gather marketing materials. Ask drivers for some advice, a testimonial on your company, or something fun that you can share on your website, marketing materials, or in communication with potential new drivers.
